Profiles: Peoples' Representatives:

Tongatapu No.1 Representative

Mr. Samuela 'Akilisi Pohiva

Mr. 'Akilisi Pohiva has been a member of the Legislative Assembly for 18 consecutive years, which makes him one of the longest serving People's Representative ever.  He was re-elected in March 2004 for another term in parliament and re-confirmed his popularity with the highest vote count of all the candidates.  He is a staunch supporter of more democratic ideals in Tonga and is one of the founding members of the the Human Rights and Pro-Democracy Movement (HRPDM).

Tongatapu No.2 Representative

Mr. 'Isileli Pulu

Mr. 'Isileli Pulu was re-elected into parliament for a second term in the March 2004 General Elections.  Having been Tonga's No. 3 Representative in his first term in parliament, it seems that his popularity has grown as he finished with the second highest vote count out of all the candidates.  Like 'Akilisi he is a staunch advocate of democratic ideals in Tonga.  Mr. Pulu was educated in Tonga High School and holds a B.A.

Tongatapu No.3 Representative

Mr. William Clive Edwards

Mr. Edwards is a qualified lawyer by profession and was educated in New Zealand.  He has practiced law both in Tonga and New Zealand since the mid 1960's and has been involved in one form or another, in most of the major cases in Tonga .  He is also the former Minister of Police and subsequently, has already been a member of parliament for 8 years.  Dismissed from this portfolio in 2004, Mr. Edwards ran in the March General Elections but just missed out on a seat, coming in fourth in the Tongatapu electorate but got another opportunity after the appointments of the 4 new Ministers.  He campaigned by forming a new party called the "People's Democratic Party" with Professor Futa Helu and won a closely contested race against Finau Tutone in the 2005 By-Elections.

Ha'apai No.1 Representative

Mr. 'Uliti Uata

Mr. 'Uliti Uata has been member in parliament for 12 consecutive years and has just began his fifth term after the March general elections.  Like 'Akilisi, he is a staunch supporter of more democratic ideals in Tonga and has been a very active member in the past.  He is a businessman by profession and amongst his many ventures are 'Uata Shipping LTD and the 'Uata building complex located at Taufa'ahau road in Nuku'alofa.  He freely declares these pecuniary interest and sees it as an advantage for the House to have a business-minded politician.  As such, he has a keen interest in monitoring and trying to improve Tonga's economy.

Ha'apai No.2 Representative

Mr. Fineasi Funaki

Mr. Fineasi Funaki is currently serving his second term in parliament.  Like most of the People's Representatives, he believes that Tonga should be moving towards more democratic ideals.  A former school-teacher, he not only brings into the House a no-non sense approach to debating but also an ability to handle heated debates with a claim and relaxed manner.  He is an active member in his church and as well as the Human Rights Pro-Democracy movement.

Vava'u No.1 Representative

Mr. Samiu Vaipulu

Although, Mr. Vaipulu was re-elected to the House in the 2005 General Elections, he is certainly not a new member.  He is a well-known and well-respected business man in Vava'u, having his own legal practice and other assorted business ventures.  In fact he was one of the co-founders of the "whale watching" ventures in Vava'u, as an alternative means for locals to preserve the whale population but still make money.  He is an active member of the Vava'u Tourism Committee and is an advocate of open trade and more liberal immigration policies in Tonga.

Vava'u No.2 Representative

Mr. Viliami Kaufusi Helu

Mr. Helu's election to the House came as rather a surprise to many people.  As many as 5 candidates could have won this seat as it was the closest fought seat in the March 2005 general election.  Mr. Helu is a well-respected man in his community and is an active participant in his church.

'Eua Representative

Mr. Sunia Fili

Mr. Sunia Fili has been the 'Eua Representative for 6 years and was again the most popular choice of the people of  'Eua by an overwhelming majority.  He comes into parliament with a legal background having worked as a Law Practitioner in both 'Eua and Tonga.  His interest in Law makes him an ideal person to oversee the law-making processes of parliament and to protect  the rights of citizens.

'Niuatoputaptu & Niuafo’ou Representative

Mrs. Lepolo Mahe Taunisila

Mrs. Taunisila is a teacher by profession and has taught in Tonga for many years before moving to the isolated northern islands of Niua, where she rose to the position of Deputy Principal at the local secondary school.  She entered the House per the 2005 Bi-election to replenish the seat vacated by Mr. Peauafi Haukinima (now the Hon. Minister of Forestry).  Although she is not the first woman to be elected to the Tongan parliament, she is only the fourth ever women to be a member of the House.  Mrs. Lepolo holds a BA from the University of the South Pacific and an MA from Deakin University in Australia.
