The Speaker of the House

Hon. Veikune was appointed the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly by His Majesty King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV on the 22nd of March 2005, to replace Hon. Tu'ivakano who has appointed as the new Minister of Works.  The Speaker of Parliament is appointed from one of the 9 Noble Representatives.  The Speaker is one of the highest post in Tonga's Order of Precedence, and just as the Prime Minister the Head of the Executive government, the Speaker is the Head of the Legislature.

Hon. Veikune is the Noble's No. 1 Representative from Vava'u.  Although he was re-elected into parliament in March of 2005, he is not a new member as he has being a member of the House before.  Likewise, he is not new to the position of Speaker, as he was the Speaker from 1999 to 2002.  He brings a great wealth of experience to the post, having being a Representative for many years and is well-respected by the members of parliament.
