You can fly direct to Tonga via Auckland, New Zealand; Sydney, Australia; Suva, Fiji; Apia, Samoa; Honolulu, Hawai'i; or Los Angeles. Most tourist fly in via Auckland and Suva. Air New Zealand, Air Pacific and Air Polynesia fly direct to Tonga. The domestic airline in Tonga is Peau Vava'u Air, and their office is located at the Pacific Royal Hotel in Nuku'alofa. Peau Vava'u flys to Ha'apai, Vava'u and 'Eua.
Relative costs:
Accommodations can range from $20 pa'anga for a single room to $150 pa'anga a night for a suite, depending on your accommodation requirements. Basic food can be purchased for less than $6 pa'anga to more than $35 pa'anga for the restaurants. An average backpacker can get by at about $30 US a day, but you will be constraint in the activities you choose to do. For a real Tongan experience an expenditure in the vicinity of $70-80 US is required. Activities such as diving, snorkeling, whale watching or trips to remote island destinations, will make the trip a little bit more expensive. For all the modern comforts of home, top restaurants and five-star accommodation, you'll be looking at a budget in excess $150 US a day. ATM's machines are available in town and you can use most cards on it. The three main banks in Tonga is Westpac Bank of Tonga, ANZ and MBF and they will accept for exchange US, Australian, New Zealand and British currencies, although they usually accept for exchange other generally recognized currencies. Visa and MasterCard is always accepted by the main hotels and restaurants. Taxis are fairly cheap at around 2 pa'anga around town and about 40-50 pa'anga for a day-trip around Tonga. T are easily recognizable as they have a "T' licence plate. Rental cars can also be hired at around $80-$100 pa'anga a day and are fairly easy to rent, all you need is a passport or some other ID. Flying is the easiest way to go from Tonga, Ha'apai and Vava'u but some of the smaller islands may require you to charter a boat.
