Tonga is still a COVID-19 free country, the former Health Minister has asked Cabinet to consider diverting funds from its FY 2020/21 budget allocation towards road improvements towards vaccination against novel coronavirus.

THE Public Accounts Standing Committee is considering a motion from the Hon. Prime Minister for a 20 percent cut in legislator’s basic salary due to the impacts of COVID-19.

The House voted to send the Prime Minister’s motion to the Public Accounts Committee to consider it before reporting to the House.

GOVERNMENT has announced a budget deficit of about $60million from its total proposed Estimates of $589.6 million for the 2020/2021 financial year.

The $589.6 million budget consists of the $465.8million government budget support and donor cash and 123.78 million (59 percent) donor in-kind.

(Nuku’alofa, Tonga) 11 May 2020 – In preparation for the tabling of the 2020-2021 national budget, which will also include the appropriation for the COVID-19 stimulus package, the Legislative Assembly of Tonga is benefitting from the remote support of the “Pacific Floating Budget Office” initiative developed by the United Development Programme.
