THE Legislative Assembly yesterday unanimously approved the appointment of Mr Sefita Tangi to the position of Auditor General.

The post has been vacant since December last year after the former Auditor General who is now the Minister of Police, Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa won the seat for Tongatapu Constituency 10 in the last general election.

The office of the Auditor General comes under the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly a move to assure the independence of the Auditor General..

This is to prevent any conflict of interest and overlapping of mandate.

Mr. Tangi’s term as the new Auditor General will run for five years subject to an extension of an additional term.

Prior to Mr Tangi’s appointment he served as a member of the Remuneration Commission and was a former Commissioner of Revenue.
