IT is important for the people to obey all precautionary measures and advice from the health authorities to prevent any chance of the COVID 19 coronavirus spreading in Tonga.

This was part of the message from his Majesty King Tupou VI that was delivered to the Legislative Assembly of Tonga during Parliament's soft closing ceremony today, March 26, 2020.

According to his Majesty, the coronavirus outbreak is now a pandemic that affects the world including Tonga. It is therefore crucial for Tongans to obey the coronavirus advisory from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Ministry of Health for protection against the coronavirus and to minimize the spread of the disease (coronavirus).

 His Majesty also asserted that the Government should make health issue a priority key area of concern for its citizens in the future

On education, His Majesty stated that education is compulsory in Tonga and Government should ensure its continual provision of quality education for all. While at the same, it is crucial to provide and equip them for higher tertiary education abroad.

“With students returning from further studies overseas, they work to build different sectors in the economy. In achieving better health and good education systems are key to strengthening and boosting our economy,”

For that reason, the King’s message did point out that “Government should work in partnership with the church and the people to build our economy.  

His Majesty also thanked the governments of Japan, New Zealand, Australia, the People’s Republic of China, the British government and donor agencies for their continuous support to help Tonga during this challenging time. He also acknowledged their concerted efforts to further boosting education and the development of our nation.

Meanwhile the Hon. Prime Minister Dr. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa also confirmed to Parliament the 6th COVID suspect test return negative. It was an 18-month-old baby. He made the confirmation during a special briefing of MPs on the deadly disease following the soft closing of Parliament.

Hon. Tu’i’onetoa also mentioned that blood tests of suspected cases numbers 7 and 8 were sent to Australia yesterday. Results are yet to receive.

The message from His Majesty King Tupou VI was delivered by Lord Lasike and two other Nobles of the Realm Lord Tuita and Lord Luani to the Legislative Assembly of Tonga.
