WRIT OF ELECTION ISSUED TO THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION TODAY CALLING FOR BY-ELECTION FOR TONGATAPU 8

The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Lord Fakafanua, today, issued to the Electoral Commission, a writ of election to elect a new Parliamentary Representative for the Tongatapu 8 Constituency. The by-election is called due to vacancy in the parliamentary seat for Tongatapu 8 since the passing of their Representative, Hon. Semisi Tauelangi Fakahau, on 26 October 2022.

The date for the by-election to elect the Representative for the people of Tongatapu 8 was confirmed today for Thursday 19 January 2023, after consultation between the Lord Speaker of Parliament and the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, the Rt. Hon. Lord Dalgety K.C, as required by the Legislative Assembly Act.

The writs of election informing the results of the by-elections that were held for Tongatapu 4, Tongatapu 6, and Tongatapu 7 on 3 November 2022, were also returned to the Lord Speaker of Parliament today. The Members of Parliament who have been duly elected for these respective constituencies were Mateni Tapueluelu for Tongatapu 4, Dulcie Elaine Tei for Tongatapu 6, and Paula Piveni Piukala for Tongatapu 7. The newly elected Members of Parliament will take their oath as Representatives, as is required by clause 83 of the Constitution, at the next meeting of Parliament on a date to be notified.
