PARLIAMENT is adjourned until 2.30pm so the Interim Speaker Rt.Hon Lord Tupou could have an audience with the King to report the winning candidate to become Tonga’s new Prime Minister.

Rt. Hon Lord Tupou announces this after the newly elected MPs casted their secret ballot.

When the House resumes at 2.30pm, Lord Tupou will announce the results of the secret ballots.

It will be followed by the election of a Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly immediately.

Only Noble Representatives are eligible candidates for Speaker and Deputy Speaker positions.

If there is only one nomination, that Noble shall be the Speaker and the meeting will proceed to elect the Deputy Speaker.

If there are more than one nomination, a secret ballot will be conducted.

INTERIM Speaker Rt Hon. Lord Tupou officially announces the two nominations for the Prime Minister in Parliament this morning.

ANOTHER nomination for the Premiership role was submitted to the Office of the Legislative Assembly today. Tongatapu 10 constituency MP, Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa put in the PTOA’s submission to the Clerk of the House, Gloria Pole’o at about 9:30am this morning.

THE Legislative Assembly of Tonga will reconvene for a special sitting on Wednesday December 24th to elect the new Prime Minister (PM), according to Interim Speaker Lord Tupou.

His Majesty has appointed Rt Hon Lord Tupou K.C as the Interim Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga effective from last Friday, November 28th, 2014.

In a Press Release issued from the Office of the Interim Speaker states the appointment of the  Interim  Speaker was made  pursuant  to clause 61 and subsection (8) of the Schedule of the Act of the Constitution of Tonga.

This provides that the King shall appoint an Interim Speaker following a general election, to be made within seven days from  the declaration of the result  of the general election.

The Interim Speaker  is responsible for presiding over the  meeting of the elected Representatives for the purpose of electing a Prime Minister as well as the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of  the Legislative  Assembly.
