The 2024 Parliamentary Session officially concluded today with the Address from The Throne delivered on behalf of His Majesty King Tupou VI, emphasizing the Legislative Assembly’s important role in upholding government accountability.
Represented by three Nobles of the Realm—Lord Tu’ivakano, Lord Ma’afu, and Lord Nuku—the address was read by Lord Ma’afu before Members of Parliament. His Majesty emphasized that it is Parliament’s constitutional duty to ensure the Prime Minister and Cabinet govern within the bounds of the law and the Public Finance Management Act.
The address also reflected on Tonga’s historical sacrifices, referencing the War Memorial Cenotaph at Pangai Si’i, and called on MPs to lead by example, learn from the past, and promote peace and prosperity.
Acknowledging Tonga’s Christian foundations, His Majesty reminded the nation of three key commandments: “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy , “Thou shalt not steal.” “Thou shalt not covet.”
He encouraged all Tongans to return to God, stating that the country’s dedication to Him underpins its freedom and progress. He also expressed gratitude for the support of international development partners.
Speaking after the ceremony, Lord Speaker Fakafanua described the King’s message as a timely reminder of Tonga’s values and responsibilities. His Majesty reminded us that our freedom came at great sacrifice, and it is our duty to protect it by upholding the Constitution and leading with integrity.
Lord Fakafanua also highlighted the session’s legislative achievements, including the passing of the Tonga Youth Justice Bill, which provides alternative pathways for young offenders, and the Computer Crimes (Cybercrime) Bill, aimed at addressing online threats and misinformation.
