THE Legislative Assembly of Tonga has unanimously approved a motion to refer the 2025 Supplementary Budget Details to the Public Accounts Standing Committee for further scrutiny.
Committee Chair Hon. Hu’akavameiliku tabled the motion on Tuesday by, following the passing of the 2025 Supplementary Appropriation Bill on April 9. The Bill allocates TOP $31 million to key government initiatives, including a $10 million provision for road maintenance, as announced by Finance Minister Hon. Dr. ‘Aisake Eke.
However, Hon. Hu’akavameiliku pointed out a discrepancy between the supplementary budget details provided by the Government and the amount approved by Parliament. While the approved budget totals TOP $31 million, the explanatory documents indicate a total of TOP $33 million.
The Committee is now seeking clarification from the Ministry of Finance on the $2 million difference and has also raised the need to amend the original 2024/2025 budget estimates.
His Majesty has not yet granted royal assent to the Supplementary Appropriation Bill passed last month.
