The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga Lord Fakafanua joined Speakers from around the Pacific including New Zealand in the inaugural Tai a Kiwa Speakers, Presiding Officers and Clerks Virtual Conference. The theme of this two-day virtual conference is “Leadership and Influence during times of Uncertainty”.
Lord Fakafanua presented a country report sharing Tonga’s experience and reflect on the flexibility of Parliaments during emergencies, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic.
The Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representative, Rt Hon Trevor Mallard in his welcoming speech said “ our communities are relying on decision-makers to lead through unprecedented challenges in health, environment, and economy. Parliamentary scrutiny, executive accountability, and transparency are crucial in ensuring these decisions are robust and in the best interests of the public we serve”.
In the first sessions of conference, Hon. Jenny Salesa the Deputy Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives shared her experience in her new role as a Deputy Speaker and how Clerks play a vital role in assisting Speakers and MPs perform their roles. Her views were echoed by the new Speaker of the Cook Island Parliament Hon Tai Tura and Hon Hima Douglas, Speaker of the Parliament of Niue.
The conference will conclude on Wednesday 3rd of November.
