The Legislative Assembly of Tonga has elected Hon. Dr. ‘Aisake Valu Eke as the nation’s new Prime Minister Designate, following a decisive vote today.
Hon. Dr. Eke, representing Tongatapu People’s Representative 5, won with 16 votes, defeating his opponent, Dr. Viliami Uasike Latu, who received 8 votes.
The election took place in Parliament today after the resignation of former Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku, who stepped down on December 9th.
The Speaker of Parliament, Lord Fakafanua officially announced the results after the election was presented to His Majesty King Tupou VI.
In his acceptance speech, the new Prime Minister Designate Hon. Dr. Eke expressed his gratitude for the confidence placed in him and stated that he accepted the role with a humble heart.
He also extended his best wishes to His Majesty, the Nobles, and all Members of Parliament as they move forward in their shared responsibilities.
Meanwhile, Hon. Dr. Viliami Latu congratulated Dr. Eke on his victory and expressed his commitment to working together for the betterment of the country.
The Parliament has now adjourned until further notice as the nation awaits the formal confirmation of Dr. Eke's leadership and the next steps to be taken in the coming weeks.
