Inkfish Expedition recently shared the results of its scientific research conducted in Tonga’s waters with members of the Legislative Assembly. The presentation was made to the Speaker of Parliament, Lord Fakafanua, and several MPs.
In 2024, Inkfish embarked on two major scientific expeditions in Tonga. The first expedition involved surveying the extreme depths of the Tonga Trench, which reaches a depth of 3,800 meters. The second, a 95-day exploration, focused on Tonga’s mesophotic reef ecosystem. This mission also examined fish diversity around Kao Volcano, conducted fish sampling, and studied tsunami storm rubble.
Expedition leader Dr. Joe O’Gallaghan highlighted that the team deployed a range of equipment for their research, including mapping tools. This mapping effort is the first step in a three-phase survey aimed at determining the depth and steepness of the sea floor.
The briefing aimed to present the expedition’s findings and share Inkfish’s expertise on Tonga’s unique and rich biodiversity, dynamic geology, and complex oceanography.
