What's happening now in the Parliament?

The Hihifo community in Niuatoputapu raised three critical issues for their People’s Representative, Hon. Vātau Mefi, to address during his 2024 parliamentary visit program.

Key concerns discussed included the rising sea freight costs, the deteriorating road conditions, and issues with the voltaic solar light system.

During the meeting, community members stressed the urgent need for road repairs due to their poor condition, which has been causing inconvenience and safety concerns. There were also calls for the immediate replacement of faulty street solar lights.

In addition, villagers expressed disappointment over the performance of the voltaic solar system. The current lighting time is limited to 12 hours, whereas they believe it should be able to operate for 18 hours, as originally intended.

Separately, Hon. Hui also met with Niuatoputapu Airport workers, who raised two significant issues: the need to repair an essential ATS trolley and replace the roof of their office.

Hon. Hui is scheduled to meet with the residents of Vaipoa this evening as part of his ongoing visit.

The parliamentary visit is an opportunity for constituents to share their concerns with their MP, which will be compiled into a report for discussion in Parliament. The visit is expected to conclude next week.
