MEMBERS of the public are invited to attend the opening of the 2025 Speaker’s Debate Series this evening at 6:00 pm in the Parliament Chamber.
The first debate will tackle the topic: “Seabed Mining: The Good and the Bad”, focusing on the potential economic benefits and environmental concerns surrounding deep-sea mining—a sector where Tonga has been active since 2011 through Tonga Offshore Mining Limited.
Featured speakers include environmental advocate Rose Kautoke, international expert Lori Lori Osmundsen, deep-sea explorer Victor Vescovo, and geologist Taniela Kula.
Hon. Viliami Latu and Hon. Vaea Taione will take the floor to argue opposite views of the seabed mining issue.
With expert presentations, a parliamentary-style debate, and a public question-and-answer session, the forum aims to foster transparent discussion and thoughtful decision-making on seabed mining in Tonga.
