THE Speaker of the Legislative Assembly today warmly welcomed Politics students from the University of the South Pacific’s Tonga campus to Parliament.

Ten students observed parliamentary proceedings as part of their studies on governance and lawmaking. Before the session began at 2:00 p.m., the Sergeant-at-Arms briefed them on parliamentary rules and conventions.

Speaker Lord Fakafanua encouraged them to consider politics as a career, hoping the visit would inspire new ideas and insight.

Former Deputy Speaker Lord Tu’i’afitu also welcomed the group and emphasised the importance of understanding governance and the legislative process and encouraged them to pursue further studies in politics.

Chairman Lord Tu’ilakepa, also addressed the students, highlighting that most in-depth discussions and debates take place within the Whole House Committee.
