A strong call has emerged from various electorates in Tonga for continued support of community policing initiatives aimed at enhancing public safety, particularly in the fight against the widespread use of illicit drugs.

During a recent meeting held by Hon. Dr. ‘Aisake Eke in Fahefa, the Tongatapu 5 constituency expressed a plea to the Legislative Assembly to prioritize and promote community policing for the safety of its residents.

The discussion was sparked by a female resident who voiced her concerns about inadequate street lighting in the village, fearing for her family's safety. She reported observing suspicious vehicle activity at night and was deeply worried that drug runners were operating in the area, making her feel unsafe living alone with her daughter.

This resident also highlighted the presence of vulnerable elderly and young females in the neighborhood, emphasizing the need for greater safety measures. In response, a male resident in his 60s proposed that Parliament provide ongoing support for initiatives aimed at addressing drug-related issues and deterring crime.

Reports from Tongatapu 10 and Vava’u 14 constituency visits further stressed the urgent need for Parliament’s financial backing through the Constituency Fund (CF) to empower community policing efforts.

Last week, the Noble Representative of ‘Eua, Lord Nuku, and People’s Representative Hon. Taniela Fusimalohi met with local police forces in ‘Ohonua and community police members to explore ongoing partnerships to tackle social disorder and fears of crime.

Additionally, community policing initiatives, including neighborhood watch programs, are actively taking place in Tongatapu 1, featuring day and night patrols for enhanced public safety and crime prevention.

It is noteworthy that community policing was not specifically included in the budget allocation for the Legislature Office for 2024/2025, a departure from previous years, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic.
