LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF TONGA TO HOST TONGA YOUTH PARLIAMENT 2024

The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga, Lord Fakafanua, is pleased to announce the inaugural Tonga Youth Parliament, scheduled to take place from 2 to 6 September 2024. This landmark event aims to empower young Tongans by providing them with a unique platform to engage in parliamentary processes and explore their role in shaping the future of our nation.

Lord Fakafanua emphasised the importance of holding a Youth Parliament because Tonga has a relatively young population. A significant proportion of the population are under the age of 34 years. Their voices should be heard, particularly on issues that impacts them.

The Tonga Youth Parliament 2024 is open to youth aged 14 to 34 years. This platform gives the youth the opportunity to experience parliamentary debates firsthand, simulate legislative processes, and discuss critical issues affecting the youth and their communities. It is designed to foster leadership skills, enhance civic engagement, and encourage young people to actively participate in democratic governance.

Applications for a place to take part in the Tonga Youth Parliament 2024 opens today 2 July and closes on 31 July at 12noon. Interested Tongan citizens within the specified age range are encouraged to apply. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the discourse
on key issues facing Tonga today.
