LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF TONGA
PRESS RELEASE
Public Consultation on the Pacific Games Organization Bill 2026
Legislative Assembly of Tonga to host Public Consultation on the Pacific Games Organization Bill 2026
Three Standing Committees of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga will jointly host a public consultation on the Pacific Games Organization Bill 2026.
The Standing Committee on Social Services, the Standing Committee on Finance and Public Accounts, and the Standing Committee on Legislation will jointly host the public consultation this Friday, October 2nd, at the Parliament Chamber in Nuku’alofa, commencing at 2pm.
The public consultation will provide an opportunity for members of the public and relevant stakeholders in Tonga to learn more about the Pacific Games Organization Bill 2026, share their views, raise questions and provide feedback on the Bill. The consultation will be held to promote public awareness, encourage community participation, and ensure that the views and perspectives of the public are heard and considered.
The Pacific Games Organization Bill 2026 aims to establish the organizational structure for the Pacific Games 2031 to be held in Tonga. The Bill will remain in effect until the conclusion of the Pacific Games 2031, after which it will be repealed.
The Bill also provides for the establishment of the Organization Committee and sets out other provisions required by the Games Council - both in the Host Contract and in the Pacific Games Charter. Many of the provisions in this Bill are mandatory as far as the Games Council are concerned — they are a condition of Tonga getting to host the Games. These requirements are basically standard and imposed on other countries that have been awarded to host the Pacific Games in recent times.
The Pacific Games Organization Bill 2026 was introduced in Parliament by the Minister for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Hon. Fane Fotu Fituafe, on August 24th, 2026. It was subsequently tabled before Parliament on September 8th, 2026 and referred to the three Standing Committees for further consideration and deliberation.
Members of the public and related stakeholders are encouraged to attend and actively participate in the consultation.
