FIRST EVER SPEAKER’S DEBATE
“CAPITAL PUNISHMENT AS A DETERRENT FOR ILLICIT DRUG OFFENCES?”
The Legislative Assembly of Tonga is pleased to announce the Lord Speaker’s First Ever Debate on the topic of CAPITAL PUNISHMENT AS A DETERRENT FOR ILLICIT DRUG OFFENSES?. This debate will take place at 10:00am on Tuesday, 28th May 2024 at the Fale Alea 'o Tonga Chambers in Nuku'alofa.
Speaker’s debates are a longstanding tradition in parliaments worldwide. This marks the first time the Legislative Assembly of Tonga will host a public debate. Beginning in 2024, the Legislative Assembly plans to make the Speaker’s Debates a bi-annual event.
As Tonga faces increasing challenges related to illicit drug offences, this debate aims to address the effectiveness of capital punishment to deter and eliminate illicit drug-related crimes. The discussion will feature a diverse panel of experts, including policy makers, human rights advocates, public health experts, law enforcement officers and community representatives. Their collective views will provide a comprehensive examination of the topic from diverse perspectives. There will be an opportunity for the public to join the debate.
The outcome of this debate is important for shaping the future of Tonga's illicit drug policies and ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities. By bringing together knowledgeable and experienced speakers, we hope to foster a meaningful debate on whether capital punishment is the best deterrent for illicit drug offences in Tonga.
