The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Rt Hon Christopher Luxon, was warmly welcomed at the Legislative Assembly of Tonga by the Speaker, Lord Fakafanua, and Lady Fakafanua. During his visit, which was covered by the New Zealand media, the Prime Minister addressed questions about his participation in the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting held in Tonga.

Following the assembly visit, Prime Minister Luxon attended a luncheon hosted by the Speaker and Lady Fakafanua at Liku’alofa Resort, located on the scenic shores of Fanga’uta Lagoon. This event provided a valuable opportunity for in-depth discussions on strengthening bilateral relations between Tonga and New Zealand, with a particular focus on enhancing parliamentary ties and cooperation.

The luncheon allowed for meaningful dialogue about ways New Zealand can support the Tongan legislature in its law-making, oversight, and representative functions. Both parties explored potential initiatives for collaboration, aiming to foster closer relations between their respective legislative bodies and nations.

A highlight of the visit was a moving performance of Harry Belafonte's "This is My Island in the Sun" by young Tongan talents Lydia Taukafa and Ellie Moala, alongside reigning Miss Heilala, Racheal Guttenbeil. The performance, set against the backdrop of Fanga'uta Lagoon, poignantly highlighted the themes of climate resilience and the challenges faced by youth and future generations in Tonga.

Prime Minister Luxon's brief visit underscored the enduring and robust relationship between New Zealand and Tonga, reinforcing the commitment to further collaboration and mutual support.
